Unique Things to do in Kansas City during your Missouri Getaways
Kansas City offers a wealth of activities and attractions for visitors to enjoy. From professional sports to live jazz, art museums to historical sites, there is something for everyone. You’ll love enjoying the vibrant urban center, even better when you know our peaceful and private B&B awaits your return. Here are some of the more unique attractions to enjoy during your Missouri getaways:
- Explore the underground network of tunnels and caves in SubTropolis, the world’s largest underground business park. Up to 160 feet below the surface, in the Bethany Falls mine, is a 55,000,000-square-foot business complex featuring over 8 miles of paved roads, 500 truck docks, and employing over 2,000 people from more than 55 companies, including the United States Postal Service and the Environmental Protection Agency. Visitors can drive through SubTropolis during business hours.
- Explore the history and evolution of jazz at the American Jazz Museum in the 18th and Vine District. You’ll learn about the role of Kansas City in the development of the genre. Next to the museum, a giant green head statue pays homage to one of the jazz greats, Charlie Parker.
- Visit the Arabia Steamboat Museum. In 1856, the Steamboat Arabia sank near Kansas City and was lost for over 132 years. The recovery operation in 1988 was a modern-day treasure hunt. Artifacts have been preserved and displayed in the museum in the historic City Market.
- Kansas City is home to over 200 fountains, so it’s no surprise that there are some silly ones. The Boy and the Frog fountain is one of our favorites and can be found in Country Club Plaza.
- The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures is home to the most extensive collection of fine-scale miniatures and one of the world’s largest collections of historic toys. The former editor of LIFE magazine says it’s “my favorite museum.”
- The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is one of the world’s finest art museums. Its extensive collection includes art from nearly every continent and culture. A quartet of giant Shuttlecocks adorn the sculpture park outside the museum.
- While not technically in Kansas City, the Glore Psychiatric Museum in St. Joseph, Missouri, is a fascinating place to visit and one of the most unique museums in the country. Located just under 30 minutes from Kansas City, the museum showcases artifacts and chronicles the evolution of mental health care treatment.
- Make sure you try our most famous food during your Missouri getaways. Take a Kansas City BBQ tour, led by a certified BBQ judge! Savor the mouth-watering tastes of all the best joints in KC while visiting many iconic landmarks.
