Pioneer Trails Adventures
Like most great ideas, the tours started as a simple notion by Ralph, the wagon master at Pioneer Trails Adventures. He wanted to offer relaxing wagon rides around Independence Square. However, it soon became clear the rich history and stories of the area had to be added. Why not educate and bring the past to life while traveling the streets of the charming town? Ralph’s first mule, “Harry A. Truman”, was soon joined by five more that pulled the three wagons. Now the three tour options visit multiple sites all around Independence.
The original Independence Square Tour only takes 15 to 20 minutes but covers the notorious 1859 Jail that housed Jesse James’ big brother, Frank. Your guide will also point out where Harry S Truman worked his first job and also the town’s courthouse. In addition to the sites of the “Square Tour,” the City Limits Tour includes the Bingham Waggoner estate, the National Frontier Trails Center, and Bess Truman’s birthplace. This 20 to 45 minute long tour covers the history of Quantrill’s Raiders and Independence Civil War battles. The most comprehensive tour, The Full City Tour, will take about 60 to 90 minutes. Sites include several Civil War locations and The Truman Home. However, it’s the colorful stories that make each tour so special. Hear about the notorious James brothers, Wild Bill Hickok, Bushwackers and Jayhawkers and their local hangouts. Learn about the slave built 1827 Log Courthouse that was the first government building in the area. Understand more about the life and times of Harry S. Truman when visiting his home, The Truman Courthouse and The National Park Service.
